'Le Charlatan' is a 2020 Côtes du Rhône vintage released in Ireland in October 2021. Created by Irish wine connoisseur Killian Horan with assistance from Gard based wine producers Les Deux Cols, this wine was released to a selection of independent wine sellers and wine bars in Dublin. It was also featured in the Irish Times and Irish Independent.
I worked closely with Killian to develop the branding and final label for this wine. The name originally played with the wine being conceived as a knock off Côte Rôtie (and then changing!) and alluded to the production process being led by an Irish charlatan in France.
The final imagery was developed from old book art of devils. We settled on a goat, an often mischievous and ominous character in Irish folklore. A wood cut illustration and lettering was paired with a simple colour palette. A lined graphic cork dipped in yellow wax were used to match the label colour and illustration style. Finally, Emigre Fonts early French humanist Tribute OT was used on the label details to tie everything together with a nod to the wine's geographical and hand-made origins.
